  1. This is the shareware version 2.01 of FONTEDIT. FONTEDIT requires a graphics
  2. display, CGA or higher. A Hercules graphics display can be used provided you
  3. run the MSHERC.COM TSR before running FONTEDIT.

  5. FONTEDIT requires DOS 2.1 or above, and approximately 220K of available RAM,
  6. i.e., memory not used by DOS or TSRs. FONTEDIT will run from a floppy drive,
  7. but it is best to run it from a hard disk in order to allow room for temporary
  8. files and for the font file to grow.

  10. To begin FONTEDIT, simply type:

  12.                         fed13 [filename]

  14. where the optional parameter [filename] is the font file to view and edit.
  15. Wildcards (such as *, ?) are OK.
  16.  
  17. The font file being edited with FONTEDIT must be of the HP LaserJet bitmapped
  18. format. Outline fonts available in the LaserJet III are not yet supported;
  19. however, the LaserJet III will still accept bitmapped fonts. You cannot change
  20. the built-in Courier and TTY fonts of the laser printer. Postscript font files
  21. are not supported. If you are using any programs to compress font files in
  22. order to conserve disk space, make sure your files are uncompressed before
  23. using FONTEDIT.

  25. A sample font file called "handwrit.sft" is included, and sample TIFF and PCX
  26. graphics files "sample1.tif" & "sample2.pcx" are included for demonstrating the
  27. Import TIFF and Import PCX features of FONTEDIT.

  29. The file "femanual.com" is a compressed, self-extracting version of the full
  30. FONTEDIT user's manual. To extract it, simply type "femanual", and it will
  31. create the file "fontedit.doc".

  33. If using the DOS access feature, make sure your PATH includes the subdirectory
  34. containing FONTEDIT.

  36. Your CONFIG.SYS file should allow at least 10 files to be opened (i.e., it
  37. should include the statement "FILES=10"). More than 10 is OK, too.

  39. If you see the message "Input run-time module path:" when you start FONTEDIT,
  40. quit with Ctrl-C, and make sure that the run time module BRUN45.EXE is in
  41. either the current directory, or a directory in your DOS PATH.

  43. Do not use .EXE file compressors (such as lzexe or pklite) on the overlay file
  44. FED20B.EXE, or on the run time module BRUN45.EXE.

  46. The run time modules BRUN45.EXE and MSHERC.COM are copyrighted by Microsoft,
  47. and are distributed with FONTEDIT in accordance with the QuickBasic 4.5
  48. licensing agreement.

  51. legalese is required by Genus since FONTEDIT uses their PCX toolkit to support
  52. importing characters from PCX images.
